On Wednesday, multiple candidates vying for the Blaine House gathered to share their proposals for enhancing Maine’s health care system.

The forum, hosted by the Maine Primary Care Association, provided Democratic, Republican, and independent candidates an opportunity to present their visions regarding primary care access, community health centers, and the affordability challenges facing Maine families.

Nine candidates participated, sharing personal experiences with health care and mental health services.

“In addition to being a candidate for governor, I am also a mental health consumer. More than two decades ago, during a very dark and difficult time in my life, I sought mental health counseling,” said gubernatorial candidate John Glowa (I). “Throughout the campaign and as governor, I will set an example and be a strong advocate for those with mental health issues.”

“If health care and primary care are the foundation, the work that community health centers do is the front door. My principle is that front door should be reinforced, strengthened, and fortified as much as possible,” said gubernatorial candidate Dr. Nirav Shah (D).

“I’m running for governor because the state has made it to the top of every list you don’t want to be on and the bottom of every list you must top if you want to grow, and health care is no exception. We’re number five in premium costs, and we need to change so that Maine becomes the easiest state in America to buy a premium yourself and the shortest place in America to get access to primary care, measured in hours and days, not weeks and months,” said gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Bush (R).

The Democratic and Republican primaries are scheduled for June 9, with the general election set for November 3.
