TUKWILA, Wash. — A 60-year-old Carnation man died after his car left State Route 99 in Tukwila, struck a guardrail, and plunged into the Duwamish River Saturday night, according to a Washington State Patrol report and Puget Sound Fire.

The Washington State Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. as the driver of a blue 2018 BMW 328 was traveling northbound on State Route 99 in the left lane of two lanes approaching Tukwila International Boulevard.

Troopers said the car took the off-ramp to Tukwila International Boulevard, failed to negotiate a curve, and left the road, crossing the median to the on-ramp from Tukwila International Boulevard.

The BMW then struck a guardrail on the right shoulder and was propelled off the road into the Duwamish River, the report said.

Puget Sound Fire said crews were able to locate the submerged vehicle not far from shore and, although rescue swimmers entered the water rapidly, the driver was found dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the roadway was blocked for approximately three hours.

The vehicle was totaled, and next-of-kin notification was made by the King County Medical Examiner, according to the report.
