Champions League results: Liverpool, Bayern Munich comfortably advance; Barcelona routs Newcastle

Trending 2 hours ago

Mohamed Salah scored his 50th career Champions League goal as Liverpool enjoyed the home support at Anfield during a 4-0 win over Galatasaray. The Reds move on following the 4-1 aggregate win and will face PSG in next month's quarterfinals.

After going down 1-0 in the first leg, Liverpool needed a win over the Turkish side or their days in the competition were over. Dominik Szoboszlai's goal off a corner kick set piece after 25 minutes gave them the momentum they needed.

Early in the second half, Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch scored two minutes apart before Salah became the first African player to hit for 50 Champions League goals nine minutes later.

Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski each scored twice as Barcelona blasted Newcastle at Camp Nou 7-2 to advance 8-3 on aggregate. A wild first half saw both teams score twice before a Lamine Yamal penalty kick gave Barça a 3-2 lead heading into halftime. The slight edge for the home side in the tie ballooned in the final 45 minutes with a four-goal outburst, putting the Magpies away and securing a place in the quarterfinals.

According to Squawka, the seven goals allowed by Newcastle ties Tottenham (vs. Bayern Munich in October 2019) for the most by an English team in a European competition.

Randal Kolo Muani's first-half goal gave Tottenham hope, but Spurs could not complete a comeback against Atlético Madrid. Down 5-2 entering the second leg, the Premier League side saw their hopes dashed following goals by Atleti’s Julián Álvarez and Dávid Hancko to book a place in the quarterfinals with a 7-5 aggregate win.

Bayern Munich had enough of a cushion against Atalanta that Wednesday's second leg was comfortable. A Harry Kane brace, including his 50th career Champions League goal, and a Lennart Karl tally helped the Bundesliga leaders march on following a 10-2 aggregate victory.

Kane's 50 goals in 66 Champions League matches is behind only Erling Haaland (59 matches) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (62).
